Laith from Woolwich, GB stayed on July 16, 2004

"I can honestly say this was the worst hotel I have been unfortunate enough to stay in, either on business or pleasure. My complaints were as follows:- 1) On arrival we were allocated a room was directly above the reception and every time the automatic door opened in the reception area below, it made a high-pitched noise that kept us awake for a large part of the night. When we asked to move rooms in the morning, we were told that this would not be possible and that we would be stuck with two more sleepless nights. 2) On arrival I had a shower as I had just been driving for 4 hours. The floor of the shower unit threatened to overflow due to a blockage in the plug hole, I cleared this obstruction which turned out to be an accumulation of pubic hairs - clearly the plug had not been cleaned for a substantial period of time. Absolutely disgusting. 3) We ate at the restaurant "La Baia degli Dei" and were "treated" to food that was cold and tasteless. 4) The swimming pool was shut between 12.30pm and 3.30pm each day - this is the time the guests most wish to use the pool! Nowhere is this closure mentioned on your website and it should have been made clear on booking. 5) The surrounding beach is littered with refuse, although this is no doubt the responsibility of the local authority, I would have thought that they would be ashamed to be associated with such unpleasant conditions as these reflect so poorly on the hotel. 6) There was a complete absence of any UK journals or newspapers for English guests, a real shock in a four star hotel. 7) The absence of any English Language channels on the TV apart from BBC World. 8) Finally, my major complaint. In the evenings, the "American Bar" had live music which, due to the design of the hotel, keeps all guests awake until 11.30 every night. I asked the hotel manager if it would be possible to reschedule the music to end earlier or simply to reduce the volume but was told that this was impossible as this was a "normal event". This was an absolute disgrace. How do they expect any business travelers, or any guest for that matter, to return to a hotel when he or she cannot get a good nights sleep? We were so disgusted by the level of bad service, ignored requests and the intolerable noise that we cut short our stay by a day - leaving after 2 nights rather than the 3 we had intended, naturally this incurred another conversation with the manager on duty to avoid paying for the third night. The hotel is a disgrace to the Framon Group of Hotels."

Dioscuri Bay Palace top

Set in an attractive bay, the hotel boasts a view of the historical and monumental heart of Agrigento, at the foot of which lies the enchanting Valley of temples. Ideal for both the businessman and the tourist, it has 102 rooms of which 2 are junior suites, furnished in an elegant and subdued colour. All the bedrooms have balconies from which to admire the view over the sea or inland and all have air-conditioning and soundproofing. To the highest level of comfort, the rooms offer modern technology with outgoing fax capability, automatic alarm and the use of personal computers on request. Enclosed between the wings of the hotel are a covered garden and an American bar to enliven guests evenings. Founded in 581 BC by colonists from neighbouring Gela who named it Akragas, it rapidly grew in economic, civil and military importance, so much so that in league with Syracuse it vanquished the Carthaginian army at Imera in 480 BC and scaled down its expansionist ambitions. From this era the most imposing and important architectural remains, which put the city on the same artistic level as the most important Greek cities. The city is divided into two areas the modern urban centre and the Valley of the Temples, the ancient sacred territory which today has become a focus of historical and architectural interest. Without doubt the most spectacular surviving trace of ancient Akragas is the temple of Concordia. Built towards the middle of the 5th century and dedicated to the Dioscuri, the construction stands out imposingly in an amazing state of preservation in comparison with the temples of Paestum, it stands like the figure of God before that of a giant noted Goethe during his journey of 1787. The temple of the Dioscuri and that of Juno date from the same period.
